The Best Elvis Presley Sheet Cake

The Best Elvis Presley Sheet Cake

Welcome back to the kitchen, friends! Today, I am sharing a family favorite that has been a staple at potlucks, Sunday dinners, and holiday gatherings for years: the famous Elvis Presley Sheet Cake. If you are looking for a dessert that is unbelievably moist, wonderfully sweet, and incredibly easy to make, you have just found your new go-to recipe.

There is something so special about a classic sheet cake. It feeds a crowd without any fuss, and every single bite is packed with flavor. This particular cake is legendary, and once you take a bite of that warm pineapple-infused sponge topped with rich cream cheese frosting, you will understand exactly why everyone gets all shook up over it!

You will know the batter is ready when it is perfectly smooth and golden. Be careful not to overmix—just fold the ingredients gently to keep the cake light and fluffy.

Why You Will Love This Elvis Presley Cake

Over the years, I have baked countless cakes, but this one always gets the most requests. What makes it so special? First of all, it starts with a simple box of yellow cake mix. We elevate that mix by adding rich vanilla pudding, milk, oil, and fresh eggs. This creates a tender, dense crumb that tastes like it came straight from a professional bakery.

But the real magic happens right when this golden cake comes out of the oven. While it is still piping hot, we poke holes all over the top and pour a bubbling mixture of crushed pineapple and sugar right over the sponge. The cake soaks up all that sweet, fruity syrup, resulting in a dessert that literally melts in your mouth. It is almost impossible to bake a dry cake with this foolproof method!

Always wait until your sheet cake is completely cool to the touch before adding this rich, creamy frosting. If the cake is still warm, your beautiful frosting will melt right off!

Simple Ingredients for a Show-Stopping Dessert

You do not need fancy equipment or hard-to-find ingredients to make this show-stopper. Here is what you will want to grab from the pantry to get started:

  • Yellow Cake Mix & Vanilla Pudding: The secret to our ultra-moist base. Do not use sugar-free pudding here; we want all that rich, traditional flavor!
  • Crushed Pineapple: You will use the whole can, juices and all, boiled with a little sugar to create our incredible soaking syrup.
  • Cream Cheese & Butter: The foundation of our luxurious, tangy frosting that perfectly balances the sweetness of the pineapple.
  • Toasted Pecans: Absolutely essential for that satisfying, salty-sweet crunch!
The crowning glory! Generously scatter those toasted pecans over the wet frosting so they stick perfectly. The salty crunch pairs beautifully with the sweet cream.

My Top Tips for the Perfect Sheet Cake

To make sure your Elvis Presley Sheet Cake turns out perfectly every single time, keep these simple tips in mind. First, always make sure you are pouring the hot pineapple mixture over a hot cake. This helps the liquid absorb beautifully into every single crumb rather than just sitting on top.

Second, patience is a virtue when it comes to frosting! You must let the pineapple-soaked cake cool completely before you even think about adding your cream cheese frosting. If the cake is even a little bit warm, that beautiful, fluffy frosting will melt and slide right off the edges.

Finally, do not skip the pecans! The buttery crunch of the nuts is exactly what this soft, sweet cake needs for the perfect texture contrast. I highly recommend toasting them for a few minutes in a dry skillet before sprinkling them on top to really bring out their deep, nutty flavor.

The Best Elvis Presley Sheet Cake

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Servings: 15

Ingredients

Cake Base:
  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1 box vanilla pudding (3-ounce box, not sugar-free)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 can crushed pineapple (16 ounces, undrained)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
Frosting:
  • 1 package cream cheese (8 ounces, softened to room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick, softened to room temperature)
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional, but recommended)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Prep the Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, vanilla pudding, eggs, oil, and milk. Beat with an electric mixer for one minute, scrape down the sides of the bowl, and beat again for about two minutes until the batter is nice and smooth.
  2. Bake: Pour the batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Make the Pineapple Glaze: While your cake is baking, add the undrained crushed pineapple and granulated sugar to a medium saucepan. Bring the mixture just to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat.
  4. Poke and Pour: As soon as the cake is done, remove it from the oven and immediately poke holes all over the top using a fork or the end of a wooden spoon. While the cake is still hot, carefully pour the hot pineapple mixture over the top, spreading it out evenly. Allow the cake to cool completely.
  5. Whip the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and cream cheese together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add in the confectioner’s sugar, scraping down the sides as needed. Stir in the vanilla extract and fold in the chopped pecans (if using).
  6. Frost and Serve: Drop dollops of the cream cheese frosting onto the completely cooled cake. Gently spread the frosting to cover the cake, being careful not to disturb the pineapple layer underneath. Sprinkle extra chopped pecans on top for garnish before serving.
